The SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor is a straightforward breakout for detecting moisture in the soil and other materials. The soil moisture sensor is simple to set up and operate. The two big, exposed pads serve as probes for the sensor, working as a variable resistor when used together. When there is more water in the soil, the conductivity between the pads improves, leading to lower resistance and a higher SIG out. The Qwiic connector is included in this version of the Soil Moisture Sensor, making it even easier to use!

All you have to do to get the SparkFun Soil Moisture Sensor working is connect the VCC and GND pins to your Arduino-based device (or compatible development board). You'll get a SIG out, which will be based on how much water is in the soil. When exposed to a damp environment, one of the most well-known issues with soil moisture sensors is their limited lifespan. To counteract this, we had the PCB finished in gold (ENIG, or Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold).

Features:

  1. Soil moisture sensor based on soil resistivity measurement
  2. Easy to use
  3. Automatic watering of plants

Package Includes:

1 x SparkFun Qwiic Soil Moisture Sensor

Setup Guide

1
Identify the pins
Locate VCC (power), GND (ground), and data pins (SDA/SCL for I2C, MOSI/MISO for SPI, or TX/RX for UART). Refer to the pinout diagram on the product page.
2
Wire to your microcontroller
Connect VCC to 3.3V or 5V (check the module spec), GND to GND, and data pins to the appropriate GPIO pins on your Arduino or Raspberry Pi.
3
Install libraries
In Arduino IDE, go to Sketch → Include Library → Manage Libraries and search for the sensor library. Install the recommended version.
4
Upload example sketch
Open File → Examples → [library name] → Basic Example. Upload to your board and open Serial Monitor to view output.
5
Calibrate if needed
Some sensors (temperature, humidity, distance) may need a short warm-up period or calibration. Run the calibration sketch if provided.
